AI is currently used in healthcare to inform care plans, schedule appointments, assist with surgeries, and support medical imaging analysis. Its tremendous potential has many medical practices looking to integrate the technology into their tech stacks and workflows as soon as possible. But what should you know before you integrate AI into your medical practice, and how can you determine if it’s a fit for your needs?

AI might be the most popular acronym of the last couple of years, and the healthcare industry is no stranger to the technology’s amazing potential. AI, or Artificial Intelligence, describes the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, such as computers. What makes AI so different from other technologies is its ability to interpret information and apply it in a way that allows it to learn and improve over time.

1. Deciding if and Why Your Medical Practice Needs AI

Integrating AI into your medical practice can have several benefits, but avoid integrating AI just for AI’s sake. The technology is exciting and producing a lot of buzz, but is it a fit for your practice?

Here are some things to consider before deciding to integrate:

  • Will AI help you achieve your goals? Is there a less costly way to achieve those goals in the same amount of time?
  • Is your practice prepared to onboard your staff to use AI tools and provide regular training?
  • Do you have the data quality and structure needed to integrate AI seamlessly? (More on that note below.)
  • How will AI applications integrate with your core tech stack?
  • How can you and your team familiarize yourself with any ethics, regulatory, and compliance considerations before integration?

2. Consider Your High-Level Initiatives

If you decide to integrate AI, it makes sense to start by reviewing your practice’s goals and pain points. Doing so will help you determine where it makes the most sense to integrate AI and in what form.

For example, if one of your goals is to reduce administrative burden, you may consider using an AI application to coordinate patient appointments and reschedulings. Or, if you want to improve patient communication, you might leverage an AI-based chatbot to respond to queries and funnel patients to the correct areas of your practice for their needs.

Here are some other applications of the technology you might consider:

  • Identifying trends and warning signs in patient data
  • Automating repetitive tasks
  • Performing eligibility checks, responding to requests for prior authorizations, filing insurance claims, and making referrals
  • Effectively managing resources through predictive pattern-finding

3. Staff Training and Preparation

One core aspect of successful AI integration is preparing staff to leverage the technology. You’ll need plans to communicate about the technology with staff, explain its benefits, and train staff on how to use it properly. Make sure you also include communication about potential privacy or ethics concerns.

For best results, make sure your staff understands how the technology will impact and benefit their role. Otherwise, you risk poor buy-in and low integration of AI into the medical practice. You should also plan for continuous learning so your staff can improve their technology usage over time.

4. Organizing Your Data Sources

You want to make sure your data infrastructure is prepared for AI integration if you decide to do so. AI is dependent on high-quality, organized data to function best. Before moving toward integration, make sure your data is organized, accessible, and secure.

For most medical practices, that will mean:

  • consolidating disparate data
  • cleansing and standardizing data sets
  • ensuring HIPAA compliance and the safeguarding of PHI

There’s a popular saying regarding AI that is “garbage in, garbage out.” In other words, if you input poor-quality, unstandardized data into AI, you’ll get low-quality, low-standards results.

5. Planning for Integration

Ultimately, you want to ensure that your AI applications will integrate within existing software, platforms, and other technologies in your medical practice. If the AI-based tools you’re considering won’t integrate with your EHR system and practice management software, they’ll likely wind up causing a lot of headaches. So, make a list of the key applications your practice uses every day. As you review potential AI tools, ask the providers about integration with your core technologies. This step is essential to avoiding disruption and wasted resources.

6. Ensuring privacy and security

While the potential benefits of AI in healthcare can be quite exciting, it’s important to approach AI integration into your practice through a thoughtful and cautious mindset. Take your time to review potential risks associated with its integration. Ensure you understand the affected areas of compliance, ethics, and privacy. To protect your practice and patients, thoroughly vet potential partners before adopting their solutions.
