As of March 27th, 2016, New York legislature requires physicians to electronically prescribe controlled and non-controlled substances. Since its implementation, the local community has already witnessed the benefits through the reduction of opioid abuse.

When entering any uncharted territory, there are almost always unforeseen consequences.  According to the E-Prescribing Mandate, physicians send their prescriptions to the pharmacy electronically. This direct communication minimizes fraud or abuse of the traditional call-in or hand-written prescription system.

State legislators are continually taking steps to improve the mandate. They recently approved an amendment that allows patients more freedom to choose their pharmacy. The bill authorizes providers to submit their prescription to a secured site; a patient can then request a pharmacy of their choosing to pull the data and fill the prescription.

The bill, if signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo and passed by the State Department of Health, enables patients to research pharmacies for the most inexpensive medications. Healthcare solutions, such as RXNT|eRx, automatically retrieve formulary information based on each patient’s demographics and clearly display the medications that are covered by insurance as well as alternatives. RXNT is the Official E-Prescriber for New York State Psychiatric Association (NYSPA) and offers a fully integrated EHR, PM, and E-Prescribing Solutions.
