Take a look at the highlights from AAPC’s HealthCon 2024 in Las Vegas, NV. This conference gathers professionals from across fields to discuss financial and administrative foundations of healthcare management.

In April, I headed to the American Academy of Professional Coders’ (AAPC) Healthcon 2024 in Las Vegas, NV to connect with professionals from across the healthcare industry—including medical coders, billers, auditors, educators, and physicians.

This year’s event featured leaders in a variety of healthcare fields delivering key insights, advice, and best practices. Attendees were able to engage directly with experts and get answers to their toughest questions, and everyone left equipped to tackle new challenges in the ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

In this blog, I’ll break down two of the trending topics I saw at this year’s Healthcon.

Efficiency and Affordability

When it came to conversations with professionals on the show floor, there were two topics that came up repeatedly—efficiency and affordability. With costs and demand both rising, practices and billing companies are seeking more effective ways to manage their processes.

Many of those I spoke with were eager to shift away from the archaic software of the past and move toward solutions that have caught up to modern standards. Simple, intuitive, and reasonably priced tools that reduce the need for staff to spend endless time clicking through screens and adjusting forms are winning out over the bloated mega-software of legacy brands.

The Complexities of Coding

Coding is a challenging field. Regulatory compliance, constantly-updated policies, and the complexity of each patients’ unique medical situation mean that medical coders must maintain a vast and up-to-date education. Much of Healthcon’s programming is focused on helping professionals tackle complex situations; sessions covered the nuances of coding related to inpatient facilities, ENT procedures, family medicine, anesthesiology, value-based care, and much more.

These challenges are leading organizations to look for billing and coding software solutions that ease some of the burden. Automation of routine tasks, access to updated code sets, and validation/auditing tools can save significant time and money by streamlining workflows and reducing errors.
