On August 28, 2015, Vermont became the 50th and final state to approve electronic prescribing and the dispensing of Controlled Substances (E-Prescribing of Controlled Substances Now Legal Nationwide). As the fight against prescription drug abuse continues to heat up, the next logical step is for Prescribers to adopt and utilize e-Prescribing, such as RXNT|eRx. Effective March 27th, 2016, New York will become the first state to make e-Prescribing mandatory, requiring all Prescribers to send their prescriptions to pharmacies electronically. While New York prescribers are frantically searching for e-Prescribing solutions to implement, many prescribers nationwide have been electronically prescribing for years to comply with the e-Prescribing component of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

With an increasing concern about patient safety and prevention of errors, e-Prescribing has emerged as a pivotal solution. However, Prescribers new to the technology have to consider if they know how to effectively e-Prescribe. The Journal of the Medical Association (JAMA)’s recent article entitled Free-Text Notes as a Marker of Needed Improvements in Electronic Prescribing indicates that education and training of an e-Prescribing application is not only necessary, but a substantial contributor to achieving successful outcomes. Gina Cohenour, RXNT Executive Vice President of Technical Support, has also been a Registered Pharmacist for over 20 years. Gina added,Proper use of an eRx (electronic prescription) prevents guesswork and verification calls from a pharmacy to a provider providing more time for patient care. The advancement I’ve seen in my 20 years as a practicing pharmacist is exciting. Improving quality of healthcare in the United States is [RXNT’s] primary goal.”
